:::: FAQ : BENIGN BREAST TUMORS :.
What is a cyst?
A cyst is a sac filled with fluid. Cysts form when part of the milk-producing segment (terminal ductal lobular unit) becomes obstructed, preventing normally produced fluid from draining out of the ductal system. Simple cysts are benign or non-cancerous. Large cysts may be felt as lumps and some can be quite painful or tender. Cysts will commonly disappear by themselves. To relieve the discomfort, it is occasionally necessary to drain the cyst by drawing the fluid out with a syringe and fine needle.
What is a fibroadenoma?
A fibroadenoma is a benign or non-cancerous solid lump and is most commonly found in young women. To establish the diagnosis, it may be necessary to sample the tissue in the lump by doing a needle biopsy. Although some patients prefer removal, benign fibroadenomas do not require surgical removal.
