:::: FAQ : MALE BREASTS :.

What is Gynecomastia?

The term gynecomastia refers to abnormally large male breasts. Gynecomastia is relatively common in adolescent boys, with symptoms disappearing in a matter of months in over 90% of cases. Some cases may persist for several years. In approximately 10% of cases there are medical or emotional concerns that justify surgical treatment.

Causes of gynecomastia:

  • puberty
  • steroid abuse
  • obesity
  • marijuana use
  • side effects of many medications
  • tumors
  • genetic disorders
  • chronic liver disease
  • Klinefelter Syndrome
  • aging

Enlargement of the male breast should be reported to a physician who can examine the breast and determine whether a breast imaging consultation is indicated. This may include a diagnostic mammogram and/or breast ultrasound. If you do not have a primary care physician, you may contact Pacific Breast Center directly for an appointment to see one of our breast imaging specialists.
