:::: PROCEDURE : DUCTOGRAPHY :.

Ductography is performed to evaluate the cause of spontaneous nipple discharge, coming from a single duct. 90% of nipple discharge is due to a benign (non-cancerous) condition.

Ductography is usually a painless procedure involving the placement of a tiny metal cannula or tube into the duct from which the discharge is coming. A small amount of contrast (iodine-containing fluid which renders the ducts visible on an x-ray) is injected through a tiny tube placed into the duct. Mammographic images are then taken. Abnormalities seen within the ducts may be localized in this manner to aid surgical removal.
