:::: TECHNOLOGY : MRI :.

Breast MRI

An important technology for breast tissue characterization, detection of mammographically occult breast cancer and for breast cancer staging.

Breast MRI provides unique benefits in evaluating breast tissue and defining the extent of breast cancer. It has proven very sensitive in identifying mammographically unsuspected multifocal, multicentric and bilateral breast cancer. MRI may offer the only non-invasive means to differentiate postoperative scarring from recurrent breast cancer.

“Breast MRI provides a highly accurate means for characterizing suspected breast abnormalities and discovering some cancers that may escape detection by mammography or breast ultrasound.”

In addition to its ability to image without the use of ionizing radiation, MRI data can be used to create three-dimensional images that enable better understanding of the location and extent of suspicious abnormalities.

MRI is proving to be an important adjunct to conventional mammography in screening of some high risk patients with dense breast tissue that may compromise mammography’s ability to reveal subtle abnormalities.

MRI also provides the most definitive means for determining the rupture of silicone breast implants.

High quality mammography remains the imaging method of choice for breast cancer screening. MRI is not a substitute for mammography or breast ultrasound but is an important adjunct in the workup of specific abnormalities and for selected use in screening.

Breast MRI Applications:

  • Diagnosis of breast implant rupture
  • Surgical planning
  • Staging of breast cancer and treatment planning
  • Post-surgery and post-radiation follow-up
  • Dense breast tissue evaluation
  • Monitoring of high-risk patients with a non-radiation alternative
